Student Employee Pay Scale Adjusted to Reflect Minimum Wage Change
Beginning Jan. 1, 2007, the minimum-wage increase approved in November by Ohio voters will take effect, making it necessary for the university to adjust its compensation structure for student employees.
Under the new structure, pay for student employees making less than $6.85 per hour will be increased to the new minimum wage. Current student employees earning more than the new pay scale will remain at their present pay rate. Under no circumstances will an individual’s pay rate be reduced.
In compliance with the new minimum wage standards, student employees also will receive an annual cost-of-living increase at the start of each academic year unless they already make more than the new pay scale for their position allows. This cost-of-living increase will replace pay increases in the old pay scale associated with the number of years a student has worked in a position. The cost-of-living increase is estimated to be about 3 percent.
Budgets for the 2006-2007 academic year will not be increased to accommodate the change in minimum wage.
Along with the pay increases, the reorganization has reduced the number of job levels from four to three by combining the first two levels. Formerly, Level 1 required no experience, and Level 2 required the basic skills necessary to complete job duties. The new Level 1 will require basic skills with some experience preferred. Qualifications for the upper levels will remain the same.
Following is the new student wage structure and corresponding pay:
• Level 1 (previously known as levels 1 and 2) – requires basic skills with some experience preferred. New starting pay: $6.85 per hour.
• Level 2 (previously known as Level 3) – requires that students posses specific skill sets and the ability to manage difficult situations. New starting pay: $7.20 per hour.
• Level 3 (previously known as Level 4) – highly skilled paraprofessional positions that usually include some supervisory responsibilities. New starting pay: $7.55.
• Student employees will be limited to 20 hours of work each week. Exceptions must be approved by the division’s vice president or the appropriate member of the President’s Cabinet.
