(PITTSBURGH, Pa.)--Geoff Kozak's layup with 12 seconds to go give Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University a 64-63 win over Capital University Sunday in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Capital falls to 6-4 on the season, with all four losses 10 points or less, while Carnegie Mellon moves to 6-3 on the season.
Ryan Einwag had a game-high 22 points, while Kozak had 11 points to lead Carnegie Mellon.
Capital got 21 points from junior forward Steve Kyser (Sylvania/Southview), sophomore Nate Stahl (St. Henry/St. Henry) had 18 points, while fellow sophomore Ross Niekamp (St. Henry/St. Henry) had a career-high 12 points.
The Crusaders ran out to a 9-3 lead in the game's opening four minutes, before the Tartans rallied with a 9-3 run of their own to tie the game at 12-12 with 12 minutes left in the first half. Both teams would exchange the lead before Capital went five minutes without a field goal as Carnegie Mellon would build a 28-22 lead at the three minute mark. The Tartans would extend that lead to 10 points on a Rob Pearson layup with 1:17 left, but Capital would finish the half on a 6-0 run to trail 33-29 at the break.
Carnegie Mellon would take control early in the second half and led 46-41 when Kozak hit a layup with 14 minutes to play. Capital then went on a 10-4 run to retake the lead 51-50 on a Stahl layup with 7:18 to play. Four lead changes and a pair of ties ensued over the next seven minutes before Kozak's heroics.
Capital returns to Ohio Athletic Conference play next Wednesday (Jan. 3) at 7 p.m. at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio.
