Former Enron Prosecutor To Give Insider’s Scoop on Investigation, Trial Feb. 2 at Law School

The Law School will welcome John C. Hueston, a former lead prosecutor for the trial of Enron executives Jeffrey Skilling and Kenneth Lay, to discuss key turning points in the investigation and trial with students and faculty from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2.

In his lecture “Behind the Scenes of the Enron Investigation and Trial: Creating the Conviction Moments from the Rubble of Corporate Governance Failure,” Hueston also will outline the internal investigation that could have saved Enron; corporate governance failures that created a climate that enabled Enron’s frauds; and lessons for avoiding Enron’s mistakes.

Hueston currently is a partner in the litigation workgroup at Irell & Manella LLP in Los Angeles, Calif. He has extensive jury-trial experience and has been recognized by the Daily Journal as one of the top 100 lawyers in California. Hueston recently was selected by Fortune Magazine as one of 25 men and women who shaped the business world in 2006, and he was recognized for his role as lead prosecutor with the Enron Task Force.

During his 12-year tenure with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hueston was presented with four awards by each of the last three U.S. attorneys general for his trial work. He is widely noted for having never lost a case or even a single count in any of his trials. And his work on the Enron Task Force is widely credited with having sealed the government’s criminal cases against major defendants Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling.

Hueston is an adjunct professor at Chapman University School of Law. He was a law clerk for the Honorable Frank M. Johnson Jr. of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
