Women Place Second, Men Third in 2007 Crusader Invitational

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) -- Capital University's indoor track teams hosted the five-team Crusader Invitational Saturday, and the women recorded a second place finish (123 points) while the men finished third with 100 points.

Wilmington College won both the men's (156 points) and women's (155 points) events, and Muskingum College's men's team finished second.

For the Capital women, sophomore Shelly Gaines (Grove City/Central Crossing) won the 800 meter dash with a time of 2:25.40, breaking her own school record. Junior Abby Skoda (Ashland/Ashland) won the high jump (5-00.25), sophomore Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati/Withrow) won the long jump (16-05.75) and junior Christina Heineike (Sunbury/Buckeye Valley) won the triple jump (33-06.50).

The 4x200 meter relay team also recorded a first-place finish with a time of 1:47.54, with Stanton, Skoda and freshmen Jessica Starks (Akron/Akron East) and Brittney Carter (Columbus/Westerville South) making up the team. Starks also finished third in the 200 meter dash, while freshman Blair Bowman (New Richmond/New Richmond) took second in the shot put, junior Laura Earhart (Pickerington/Pickerington Central) placed second in the pole vault and freshman Erica Crawford (Springfield/Springfield South) was second in the 55 meter hurdles.

On the men's side, Doug Gibbons (Troy/Troy) broke the school-record he set last week in the pole vault, finishing with a 15-0.  Other first-place finishers included Syl Eddy (Columbus/Bishop Ready) with a 43-03.75 in the triple jump; senior Trent Hinton (Columbus/Whetstone) with a 35.82 in the 300 meter dash; senior Charlie Smith (Westerville/Big Walnut) with a 51.26 in the 400 meter dash; and senior Nate Thornhill (Xenia/Xenia) with a 7.87 in the 55 meter hurdles.

The men's 4x200 meter relay team, made up of Hinton, Smith, and freshmen Zach Davis (Middletown/Middletown) and Jesse Ramirez (Howard/East Knox), also finished with a 1:32.72. Senior Adam Fausnaugh (Asheville/Teays Valley) took second in the shot put with a 44-05.50, and senior Evan Hartman (Mount Gilead/Mount Gilead) took second in the high jump (6-02).

Capital hosts the Rev. Mike Hout Invitational at 5:30 p.m. Friday before competing in Saturday's All-Ohio Indoor Championships Saturday in Westerville.
