Engineering Major

The Dual-Degree Engineering Major

Interested in earning a liberal arts degree and an engineering degree? At Capital you will develop as an engineer who is better prepared to assume the responsibilities of leadership in contemporary society. Our dual-degree program gives you a broad background in the humanities and social sciences.

Capital has agreements with Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and with Washington University in St. Louis, whereby students attend Capital for three years and the engineering school for two years. At the end of those five years, the student will earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Capital and a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from either Case or Washington.

Case Western Reserve University Engineering Classes

  • Biomedical engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Computer engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Fluid and thermal sciences
  • Industrial engineering
  • Mechanical and aerospace engineering
  • Metallurgy and materials science
  • Polymer science
  • Systems and control engineering
  • Undesignated major in engineering

Washington University in St. Louis Engineering Classes

  • Biomedical engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Computer science
  • Electrical engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Systems science and mathematics

Case Western Reserve Requirements for Transfers

To complete requirements for the engineering degree within two years after transferring to Case, students who finish their first three years at a liberal arts college should take courses that include work in mathematics, basic science, humanities and social sciences. At a minimum, these courses must include:

  • English - satisfactory completion of Capital's English requirement.

  • Mathematics - courses equivalent to two years of mathematics through differential equations.

  • Physics - equivalent to one and a half years of calculus-based physics, including modern physics.

  • Chemistry - courses equivalent to one year of chemistry for science majors, including laboratory.

  • Computer programming - laboratory course to develop programming skills, preferably in C language.

  • Humanities and social sciences - completion of the requirements of the liberal arts college satisfies the Case requirement, provided it is at least 24 semester hours. It is recommended that the liberal arts student complete these requirements before the transfer. A 3.0 or better grade point average is required for admission to the program, although students with a lower grade point average may apply as transfer students.

Washington University in St. Louis Requirements for Transfers

The student must successfully complete the following course requirements to earn a bachelor of science degree in engineering or applied science in two years. Washington University in St. Louis has more information on the dual degree program on their Web site.

  • At least 70 semester hours of transferable college credit with a minimum average grade of a 3.25 or better is required for admission to the program. Courses with grades of D+ or below do not transfer.

  • Mathematics - calculus sequence through multivariate calculus plus differential equations.

  • Physics - one-year sequence, calculus-based, including lab.

  • Chemistry - one-year sequence, including lab.

  • Organic chemistry - one-year sequence (required only for chemical engineering majors).

  • Computer programming - one course or certified proficiency in a high-level language.

  • English - evidence of ability to communicate effectively in written form, demonstrated by course work, acceptable examination scores or college certification of proficiency.

  • Humanities and social sciences - a minimum of 18 semester hours. Of these, at least eight semester hours must be in one department, including one course at the junior/senior level. No more than nine semester hours of the performing arts or skill courses may count toward the required 18 semester hours.

  • Biology - a fundamental biology sequence plus a course in cell biology (biomedical engineering only).

For you to earn a degree from Capital 124 semester hours of work must be completed.
