Getting Settled on Campus

Where do students live and how are roommates assigned?

All freshman undergraduates, with the exception of commuter students, are required to live on campus. New students live in Saylor-Ackermann Hall, the Lohman Complex, Cotterman Hall, or in areas of Shaaf Hall.

Students who submit their Online Housing Application by June 15 will receive the name, address and phone number of their roommate by the beginning of July. Students may request a roommate or a roommate will be selected by the university. Should any problems arise during the school year, room changes can be made.

Where do transfer students live?

With the exception of commuter students, all transfer students under the age of 23, or those who will have completed 60 semester hours by the start of fall semester, are required to live on campus.

What does a typical room look like?

Each residence hall room is furnished with two single beds and normal twin mattresses (36 x 75), two desks and chairs, at least two closets, one large double dresser, and either curtains or a window shade. The rooms have vinyl tile floors. Students may bring carpeting and drapes, although drapes are provided in Cotterman Hall. Specific measurements will be mailed with the housing information.

Are washer and dryer facilities available in residence halls?

Washers and dryers are provided in each residence hall.

Dining Halls and Meal Plans

Are there different meal options?

Students living in university housing must purchase a 225, 175 or 125 block plan. Room and board charges automatically include the 225 plan unless other arrangements are made with the Office of Residence Life. The Capital Court dining room hours are: Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Students may eat whenever the main dining room is open, however, during certain off-peak hours the full menu may not be available.

What happens if a student would like to eat off campus or an activity conflicts with the meal times?

The Crusader Club and Cru Brew Cafe snack bar provides sandwiches, salads and snacks on a limited meal plan exchange or cash basis. There is also a wide variety of fast-food restaurants within a mile of campus.

Can family members celebrate the birthdays of their Capital students?

The Capital University food service will bake a birthday cake for students with at least two days prior notice. Birthday cakes can be ordered by calling 614-236-7100.

Technology

Is telephone service available in each room?

Each student will have his or her own private voice mail box.

Do residential students have access to cable TV?

Yes, through an agreement with Time-Warner Communications, Capital provides standard cable access to each residence hall room. Standard programming includes 60 cable channels. Premium and pay-per-view are not available on this system. Students provide their own television and antenna cable to connect to the system.

What computer services are available to students?

The campus is wireless. The university also operates six computer labs for student use. The largest, located on the lower level of the Blackmore Library, has nearly 60 work stations. All computers are connected to laser printers. In addition, a 10-station lab is located in the lower level of the Campus Center.

Each residence hall has a lab with four work stations. Each student is assigned an e-mail account and takes part in a training session during orientation. Residential students are encouraged to bring personal computers for their use. Individual residence hall rooms are part of the campus voice/data/video network. Each room has a data port for each student. For data connection, an Ethernet card is required and can be purchased from the Information Technology department. Modems will not work with the digital telephone systems.

Commuter students are provided with access to the Internet, e-mail and a personalized voice mail box.

Should I buy a computer for my son/daughter?

Although computers are readily accessible on campus, some students prefer the convenience of having a computer in their room. Students are not required to bring a computer. Most computer models purchased new can be attached to the network. Capital's Information Technology department suggests these computer configurations.
