U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown To Speak at Capital University’s Spring Commencement

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown will deliver the keynote address on Saturday, May 5, as Capital University graduates 460 students at its spring 2007 Commencement.

Raised in Mansfield, Ohio, Brown is a longtime public servant who started his career in public office in 1975, when he became the youngest member ever elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. He served in the House until 1983, when he was elected Ohio’s secretary of state, an office he held for two terms.

Brown is beginning his 15th year in Congress. He represented the 13th district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1992 to Jan. 3, 2007, when he began his term as the newly elected senator for Ohio.

Brown received a bachelor’s degree in Russian studies from Yale University in 1974 and a master’s degree in education and public administration from The Ohio State University in 1991. At the Commencement ceremony, Capital will award him an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree.

Brown is married to Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Connie Schultz, who is on leave from the Cleveland Plain Dealer. They have three daughters and a son.

Commencement will be held at 2 p.m. in The Capital Center, located at the corner of Mound Street and Pleasant Ridge Avenue on Capital’s Bexley campus, 1 College and Main.

The Law School will hold a separate Commencement on Sunday, May 20.
