Capital University Business Students Take Top Honors in Global Competition

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Friday, April 27, 2007 - A team of Capital University students recently beat out 150 student teams worldwide to win the Spring 2007 Foundation Challenge hosted by Management Simulations, Inc.

The challenge ranks participants using the balanced scorecard, a strategic assessment tool that accurately measures a business unit's progress by considering the customer perspective, internal business dealings, demonstrated innovation and learning and financial growth.

All students in the School of Management’s senior-level business policy and strategy class, taught by Dr. Elene Kent, are required to complete the simulation as a class project. After winning the class competition, students Michael Ely, Christine Snyder and C. Scott Stanton went beyond the course requirements and teamed up for the global, Web-based Foundation Challenge.

The competition simulates the global marketplace, as students assume the roles of corporate executives and make decisions in the areas of research and development, production, human resources, marketing and finance. Each team uploads its decisions to a server each week, which corresponds to a year in the simulation. Results are posted the following morning, and the process is repeated for eight weeks.
In the competition’s final round, the process speeds up, requiring students to sift through volumes of information and make executive decisions each hour. The company’s stock price, bond rating and market share are among the performance measures used to determine teams’ success.

MSI sponsors two competitions – the Foundation Challenge for undergraduates, and the Capstone Challenge for graduate students. This year, the competitions included teams from dozens of countries worldwide, including Australia, Canada, Chile, France, India, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Nicaragua, Poland, Spain, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and the United States.
