Capital University

Admissions Information

The Capital MBA seeks students who have the ambition and capacity to lead and manage in a variety of settings. Leadership may not mean running an organization. Leadership happens at many levels and in many ways. Our admissions process looks for people who want to learn and lead.

The Admission Process

Applications for Capital's MBA program are reviewed on a rolling basis. We recommend the following application schedule, though application review and admissions will continue beyond these dates as space permits:

  • Submit application materials by April 1 to begin MBA courses summer semester (May)
  • Submit application materials by July 1 to begin MBA courses fall semester (August)
  • Submit application materials by Nov. 1 to begin MBA courses spring semester (January)

As a function of the university's managable size, we are able to allow some flexiblity in the admissions process. As a result, application materials may be submitted as you complete them.

The admissions committee screens prospective MBA candidates based on an entire admissions portfolio. This portfolio is intended to demonstrate a candidate's capabilities and ambitions. This portfolio includes:

Your Work Experience

The Capital MBA is designed for working professionals. Most students work full time in managerial or professional roles while attending the program. Students' workplaces provide a rich resource for understanding and applying the ideas learned in the classroom. The admissions committee expects at least two years of professional work experience. The work experience can be in a non-business environment, but should demonstrate managerial or professional capabilities. Teaching, health care and military service are all considered professional work experience. The "typical" Capital MBA student has 7-8 years of work experience. International students do not need to be employed while attending the Capital MBA.

Your Undergraduate Experience

The term undergraduate experience is deliberately used. The admissions committee carefully evaluates undergraduate transcripts to understand much more than simply GPA. The committee considers a variety of questions when evaluating undergraduate transcripts. What was the undergraduate major? What is the college's reputation? Did the applicant perform better after an initial"adjustment period?" Did the candidate perform better in his/her major? Did the candidate perform better in quantitative areas or in courses which emphasized writing? Did the candidate perform better after leaving school and returning to complete an undergraduate degree?

Your Performance on the GMAT exam

The Capital MBA requires applicants to submit current (within five years) GMAT exam scores as part of the admissions process. The GMAT exam is one way that the admissions committee can evaluate a candidate's ability to succeed in the classroom. The Capital MBA requires students to perform both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The GMAT exam provides us with one indicator of an individual's capacities in both areas. Candidates who have a Ph. D. or an MD are exempt from this requirement.

Please note: If you have already taken the GRE (within the past five years), please contact us before you take the GMAT.

Your References

Candidates for the Capital MBA must submit at least two references. These references should be able to help the admissions committee understand the candidate's capabilities and ambition. References from employers (current or former) are particularly helpful.
