2007 Baseball Preview - Crusaders Ready For Breakout SeasonCapital University's baseball team is poised for a breakout season in 2007. The Crusaders return starters in seven of the eight field positions and seven pitchers from a squad that had the team's best finish since 1995 and missed the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament by only one game.
2006 Review
Best Conference Finish in 10 Years Highlights '06 Season for CrusadersIn 1997, Capital University's baseball team went 19-19 overall and 8-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference to finish sixth in the standings. Not since 1997 have the Crusaders won eight conference games until this season, and by doing so, tied for fifth place in the league, their top finish since 1995.
In his three years as head coach, Greg Weyrich, who picked up career win number 300 this year, has turned a once decimated Capital baseball program around and has molded it into a more than competitive operation. After a total of nine conference wins combined in 2004 and 2005, Weyrich's squad posted eight in 2006 with two of them coming against OAC tournament teams in Mount Union and Heidelberg.
With all eight starters back in the field and a majority of the pitching staff returning for Coach Weyrich, a young but talented Capital team in 2006 will look to grow to new heights in 2007.
For the second straight year, Capital's offensive has been fueled by the eventual OAC batting champion with sophomore outfielder Marc St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) taking the torch from the top hitter in 2005, junior outfielder Jake Butler (Newark/Licking Valley).
St. John finished the season hitting at a .440 clip, which is exactly the same average at which Butler took the title last year. The speedy sophomore also tied with Butler for the team lead in hits with 44 while hitting two home runs and driving in 16. Butler compiled a .367 batting average, led the Crusaders with 34 runs scored and was 12-13 on stolen base attempts.
Filling out the outfield was the platoon combination of junior Jimmy Haas (Fremont/St. Joseph) and freshman Mike St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg). Haas tied for second on the team with two home runs and drove in 19, while St. John also hit two long balls and hit .300 (12-40).
Junior third baseman Graham Holmberg (Newark/Newark) provided the main power source for Capital as he smacked five home runs and totaled 30 RBIs, both team-highs. At first base, junior Will Rutherford (Cincinnati/Deer Park) got the majority of the playing time and finished with a .296 average while providing solid defensive play at first.
For the latter part of the season, the middle infield combo of junior Ryan Hutchison (Columbus/Whitehall-Yearling) and freshman Nick Snider (Granville/Granville) played second base and shortstop respectively. Hutchison hit .310, finished third on the team with 35 hits and second with seven stolen bases. Snider batted .312, finished behind Holmberg with 22 RBIs, and led the Crusaders with three triples.
At catcher, the tandem of junior Bill Christian (Poland/Poland Seminary) and senior Matt Stembridge (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) worked with the Crusader pitchers. Christian batted .304 for the season and was tremendous behind the dish as he threw out 17-of-44 (39%) baserunners, while Stembridge hit .255 with a .417 on-base-percentage.
The Crusaders pitching staff was led by freshman Nick Brown (Kirtland/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) who was the ace of the staff from day one and finished with only a 3-2 record, but an impressive 3.52 ERA in his rookie campaign.
Senior Aaron Hurney (Chesterville/Sparta-Highland), sophomore Chris Trainer (Chillicothe/Unioto), and junior Bryan White (Newark/Licking Valley) took the No. 2-4 spots in the rotation.
Hurney led the team in wins with a 4-5 record and sported a 4.83 ERA, while Trainer (3-5, 4.91 ERA) and White (1-3, 7.60) took the No. 3 and 4 spots and both will return next year.
Out of the pen, first-time hurlers in Holmberg (1-1, 3.18) and senior T.J. Brown (Dublin/Dublin Scioto), along with experienced senior Marcus Mercer (North Canton/Hoover), were the top arms throwing in relief for the Crusaders.
