Free Peer Tutoring Service

Peer Tutoring is a free service of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) and is an important part of your academic success here at Capital.  Peer tutoring helps you build on your classroom learning by teaching you to study, write, and think more effectively.

The Peer Tutors are undergraduate students who are recommended by faculty, undergo training, and are skilled in tutoring a variety of subjects, including:

  • Business (Accounting and Economics)
  • Education
  • English
  • Health and Sports Science (new!)
  • History
  • Languages (French, German, Latin, and Spanish)
  • Math
  • Nursing (new!)
  • Oral communication
  • Psychology
  • Religion
  • Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)
  • Writing

One-on-one and group tutoring begins at the start of the third week of fall semester and the second week of spring semester.   Regularly scheduled hours for writing tutoring, math tutoring, group study and review sessions, and Supplemental Instruction sessions are announced near the beginning of each fall and spring semester (see below).

Students can get tutorial assistance in a variety of ways:

  • by calling 236-6327 or stopping in the CELT in LC 100 and scheduling an appointment ahead of time for writing and math tutoring;
  • by stopping in LC 100 for drop-in writing and math tutoring (unless the scheduled tutor is working with another student) during regularly scheduled hours (see below);
  • by picking up a copy of the Tutor Yellow Pages (available in LC 100, and elsewhere on campus), locating a tutor for your course, and contacting him or her to schedule an independently arranged tutorial;
  • by attending one of the regularly scheduled Study and Review (S&R) sessions or Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions offered (see current schedule below);
  • by attending one of the Writing Workshops scheduled for this term (topics, dates, and times TBA).

Much tutoring takes place in the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), which is located in the Learning Center, Room 100. To schedule an appointment just stop in at the center, or call Lisa Miller at 236-6327.  When you come to the CELT for tutoring, please make sure you bring a copy of your assignment and any notes or drafts you've completed.  If you have any questions or would like additional information about peer tutoring, contact Academic Services Coordinator Bruce Epps at 236-6461.
