Thomas Pommering, DO

Thomas Pommering, DO, medical director for Nationwide Children’s Sports Medicine, is fellowship trained and board certified in sports medicine, and is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Pommering attended medical school at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine before completing an internship at Doctor’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, a family practice residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and a sports medicine fellowship at Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  

He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Family Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also is head team physician and medical director for Capital University Athletics and Athletic Training Education Program.

Dr. Pommering regularly teaches pediatric and family medicine residents, athletic trainers, school nurses and coaches about sports medicine issues in both the clinical and didactic settings. As well as having been the team physician for local high school, college and semi-professional athletic teams, he is currently the medical director for the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure, the Tour de Grandview Professional Cycling Race and a volunteer physician for the Columbus Marathon.

Lastly, he is part of a multi-disciplinary team involving Nationwide Children’s Hospital staff and community members working to develop educational resources to combat childhood obesity at both the local and national levels.

 
 

Kevin Klingele, MD

Dr. Kevin Klingele is a consulting orthopaedic surgeon and surgical director of Nationwide Children’s Sports Medicine. He also is assistant director of education and clinical research in the Department of Orthopaedics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Prior to joining Nationwide Children’s, Dr. Klingele completed an internship and residency at Indiana University College of Medicine and a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital through the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Surgery program. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Klingele has made numerous presentations on pediatric sports injuries, published in several journals including the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, and written chapters for such texts books including: The Pediatric and Adolescent Knee and Surgery of the Knee.

 
 

Anastasia Fischer, MD, MA

Dr. Fischer joined the Nationwide Children's Sports Medicine staff in September 2005. She received her undergraduate degree in engineering from Miami University of Ohio, a masters degree in exercise physiology from the University of Georgia, and her medical degree from The Ohio State University. She served as a resident with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and as a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow at Maine Medical Center.

Dr. Fischer is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Sports Medicine, and American Medical Society of Sports Medicine. She has made numerous presentations throughout her career on topics including the female athlete triad, concussions, physical examination skills and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. She is also active in teaching the sports medicine curriculum to the pediatric residents at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

She has been a physician with the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure for several years and provides coverage for the Tour de Grandview Cycling races each year. She is also a team physician for Groveport Madison High School and team physician/adjunct professor at Capital University.

Dr. Fischer leads Nationwide Children's Sports Medicine in collaboration with Nationwide Children's Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition, consulting with other experts to develop programs that address childhood obesity and weight management at the local and national levels.
