Football Shuts Out Wittenberg in Season Opener

(SPRINGFIELD, Ohio)--Capital University's football team, ranked No. 12 in the nation, opened the 2007 season with a 13-0 shutout victory over Wittenberg University Saturday night in Springfield, Ohio.

The Crusader defense held the Tigers to just 153 yards of total offense and three quarterback sacks.  Senior defensive end Nick Bucci (Hudson/Hudson) led the way with eight tackles and 1.5 sacks, while fellow senior defensive end Zac McKenzie (Hilliard/Hilliard Darby) and freshman linebacker Sam Jacobs (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) each had seven tackles, while Jacobs also posted 1.5 sacks.

Sophomore quarterback Marty Assmann (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) in his first collegiate start paced the Capital offense with a game-high 98 yards rushing and 112 yards passing.

Sophomore fullback Brian Porter (Mason/Mason) scored the game's only touchdown as he capped a nine-play, 67-yard, drive with 1:11 left in the first quarter to give Capital a 7-0 lead.

All-American senior placekicker Matt Spitz (Xenia/Xenia) accounted for the Crusaders other six points with field goals of 29 and 30 yards.

Wittenberg was led by sophomore quarterback Aaron Huffman who went 12-of-26 with 112 yards passing, while senior Derrick Braziel had 50 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Capital takes next week off before opening Ohio Athletic Conference play September 15 at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.
