Counseling and Assistance Program for Students (CAPS)

What?

Capital University contracts with Mt. Carmel Behavioral Healthcare (MCBH) to help students solve personal, school-related, emotional, and/ or alcohol/drug related concerns before they become unmanageable, or of crisis proportion. The idea is to provide students with free, easily accessible, short-term counseling and problem-solving services to help ensure a positive educational and personal experience while at Capital.

Who?

The counseling staff, located at the Kline Health Clinic on Capital's main campus, is experienced and diverse. Our staff includes a licensed psychologist and a licensed clinical social worker, each member bringing a strong level of expertise and many years of practice in assessment, counseling, problem- solving, and therapy.

Where?

The CAP program is located on the second floor of the Kline Health Clinic on Capital's main campus.

When?

CAPS appointments are available on Mondays and Thursdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. And, our professional staff is always on-call for emergencies. We provide 24-hour telephone accessibility for such emergency services.

How?

To schedule a CAPS office visit with a counselor, students may call (614) 546-3322. Select Option 1. They should identify themselves as Capital University students who would like to schedule an appointment. All conversations are confidential.

During the initial phone contact, MCBH will schedule the student to see a counselor. The counselor may suggest that other individuals or resources are also involved in the problem resolution—and will discuss this with the student. No one other than the counselor, however, will be involved without the student's direct consent.

Cost

The good news! There is no charge to the student for these services. Assessment, short-term counseling and problem solving may be all that is required to improve or resolve the student's concern. If other services are required, the counselor will discuss potential referrals with the student.

Why?

Everyone confronts emotional pressures at one time or another. Such pressures often could be handled more easily with the help of a knowledgeable professional. Yet, many people think they should be able to solve their problems on their own. And, they may not realize the wealth of techniques, options and alternatives that could help them to better help themselves. Our highly skilled staff has the experience to identify the source of the problem, and help the student solve that problem so that each student can have the best life and educational experience possible.
