Capital University Celebrates Constitution Day Today By Reading the U.S. Constitution

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Monday, Sept. 17, 2007–Capital University will join Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center in an event today to celebrate Constitution Day.

At 4 p.m. on the steps of Yochum Hall, students, faculty, staff and administrators will gather to read the entire U.S. Constitution, from the Preamble to the 27th Amendment, as part of “America Reads the Constitution.”

Capital University President Denvy A. Bowman will begin by reading the Preamble.

Capital celebrates Constitution Day annually in response to a little-known provision tacked onto an appropriations bill by West Virginia Sen. Robert C. Byrd and passed by Congress in 2004. The provision requires every school or college that receives federal funding to “hold an educational program pertaining to the United States Constitution on Sept. 17 of each year.”

The National Constitution Center held the first “America Reads the Constitution” on Sept. 17, 2004, and it now is considered a mainstay in Constitution Day programming.

Yochum Hall is located at the center of the Plaza at Mound Street, which runs east to west through Capital’s campus at 1 College and Main, in Bexley.

Located in Columbus, Ohio, Capital University combines personal attention with a balanced liberal arts and professional studies education to prepare students for lifelong learning, leadership and service through five colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, Conservatory of Music, Law School, School of Management and School of Nursing. Capital also offers degree-completion opportunities for adult learners through the Center for Lifelong Learning in Columbus. Founded in 1830, Capital is the oldest and one of the largest universities affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
