  4. Break is needed!!!

SPRING BREAK IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS!!! If you can’t tell I am pretty excited for break. This semester has been a physically, mentally, and time demanding semester; all the organization meetings, classes and homework, and always trying to just have time for myself have become a trying task for me and I have never been more excited to go home and do absolutely nothing. Well, not absolutely nothing, I will be meeting with a fellow peer over break to work on a possible symposium paper for the upcoming spring symposium presentation day. I never thought that researching a writing a paper could be so invigorating and interesting…work, fun? (Never thought I would put those two together anytime soon!)
Actually, there was some good fun on campus last night when there were lots of prospective students that came to spend the night! I had a really cool student that I really enjoyed getting to know and showing around campus. We went to the basketball game and enjoyed yelling and being obnoxious, then to the Rec Center to enjoy some bowling (which is always free to the students), pool, and ping pong, then off to the Wicked Wednesday which was a “Safety Week” theme and my overnight student and I got to learn how to beat each other up with self-defense moves that we learned during a demonstration.
It was a good night and now I only have one more mid-term before my spring break begins and the stress can melt away!!! I hope everyone is enjoying the snow and have a great weekend and can’t wait to update everyone on my purposefully uneventful break!!!

  5. "Fresh" Faces...

Hello Everyone! Man, what a week! Last week was an amazingly fast and eventful one! My co-ed fraternity gave out bids and received five people that are wanting to join our organization, the “Fresh 5” we call them. We had to wait until 5:15pm on Friday to figure out how many bid acceptances we received, and the wait was excruciatingly long and also very exciting when the results were in! To congratulate the new members we headed to my house for the weekend for some fun games, movies and laughs!!! Then everyone’s energy started to disappear and we crashed, only to wake up early to drive back to campus and take well needed naps.
Sunday consisted of our induction ceremony and a trip to Olive Garden for fellowship over a hearty Italian meal. The next six weeks for the new members will consist of an education program that involves service activities, study groups, and other mandatory events that we will all attend in order to build a brother and sisterhood within the group. So, for the next few weeks I will be busy getting to know the new members and planning fun events to make memories to share forever. Until then, bear the cold and wish for the warm sun!

  6. Only Four More Days...But Who's Counting?

A day of little ones everywhere! This past weekend there were lots of little children all over Capital’s campus as University Programming invited the students to bring their siblings to campus for the weekend in an annual event called Kids ‘n Sibs. It was fun to see the excitement on the faces of all the siblings because they got to “be a college kid” for a weekend with their older brother, sister, cousin, aunt, or uncle. The weekend consisted of many fun things for the participants to choose from. Events like the “Showoff Show” on Friday night, side trips that included Easton, Gameworks, Cosi, The Art Museum, or the Capital basketball game, and a showing of the awkwardly popular “High School Musical 2” which was really fun to hear how many of the Capital students actually knew the songs by heart (never seen either one until Saturday…that was an experience). After the movie there was an after party where food was available along with music for everyone to hang out and have a good time, and then the dreaded day came when everyone had to say goodbye to one another and things returned to normal on campus.
But, the normality did not last for long because it was Super Bowl Sunday and it felt like everyone that was watching the game was watching to see if New England would lose (I was one of those people). Not only did everyone get to see a good game, they also got to enjoy some of the awesome commercials that companies spend millions and millions of dollars on. I think my favorite commercial is between two; the Pepsi Max commercial with Chris Kattan or the Sobe “Thrillicious” water with the lizards dancing Michael Jackson’s famous Thriller dance. Both were great entertainment in my opinion.
But now Monday has come and classes begin again; more reading, writing, and studying to be done until this weekend when Sigma Alpha Beta and the other fraternities and sororities find out how many people are interested in joining their organization. This Friday is bid acceptance day, which is the day the people who are trying to decide what organization they would like to be a part of have to decide, and then they get to enjoy the weekend with the people from that organization before New Member Education begins. So, I am just doing everything that needs to be done for the week to make it to the weekend. Oh man, only four more days!!! (But who’s counting?)

  7. New Events and Exciting Developments!!!

What?! Three weeks into the semester...already?! Time has been flying by here at Capital for me the last couple of weeks; time is scarce with not enough hours in the day to accomplish the tasks on my “To Do List”. In the last couple of weeks there has been a lot of excitement on campus. For our first Wicked Wednesday back on campus we had a comedian name Kevin Bozeman who was hilarious!
Then we had our 100th Anniversary of Capital Basketball celebration with a doubleheader of basketball games against our rival, the Cardinals from Otterbein College. The guys’ team destroyed the Cardinals, only allowing 12 measly points in the first half! And, although our girls came up a little short it was a great weekend of sporting events for Capital.
The excitement didn’t stop there, my co-ed Christian service fraternity, Sigma Alpha Beta, was accepted into Greek Life this past week and we threw our first campus party for the Rush process this week! It went over better than any of my “sisters and brothers” could have hoped for, and we are so excited to meet more and more people and let them know what we are all about! Not only that but, this Wednesday we had a comedian/racial advocate, Preacher Moss, perform his “Stop Racism Tour” here on campus. He was amazing; mixing comedy with sincerity, he really helped me to grasp the problems in our society with racial issues. It was fun and educational, two words that you don’t always here in the same sentence!
The next Wicked Wednesday that is coming up is actually an event that a friend of mine and I are partnering up to put on for the campus community. The event is called Capital Gladiators and we are bringing in an inflatable obstacle course and an inflatable joust for the students to enjoy. Along with these inflatables, we have selected students to face off against others student in a series of events to crown the “Capital Gladiator”! We are both excited and anxious to see how this event will turn out.
Also, there have been some new renovations here on campus. There is a new café located in one of our Residence Halls along with an internet lounge area just across the hall. There have been talks of naming the café “D-Bo’s Joe To-Go” in honor of our awesome President Denvy Bowman and I support this name completely! Many of the students refer to President Bowman as “D-Bo” and we hope that he would enjoy the name as well, but only time will tell…Hopefully, by my next blog I will be able to tell you that our event went great, Sigma Alpha Beta has tons of new people, and the “D-Bo’s Joe To-Go” is the official name of the café!
