So I think the biggest surprise of my summer was not the exorbitant amount of money I spent on gas, the tornado that passed within feet of my house, or even the fact that I was on ESPN’s SportCenter while at a Cincinnati Reds game! The most surprising thing was that I was a sophomore in college!!! As goofy as that sounds it literally stopped me in my tracks. I am almost halfway done with my college education! Crazy!
Anyway, the beginning of the year went off with a bang, my class schedule is full of Political Science and Public Administration classes, I’m involved in way too many activities, and to top it off, I am currently running for the Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Board of Education. Yep, I have a lot of time. Classes are always interesting at Capital, much more in-depth than my Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) classes at another private Ohio university. The professors actually care whether or not you are learning, and not just what the book says, but the concepts you need to apply in the real world.
I’m also trying to find my place in Greek Life here on campus. I pledged Kappa Sigma Upsilon, a social fraternity, last semester and have taken an active role in both it and Greek Council. I was appointed Greek Council Vice President of Programming a month ago, and have begun planning “Snowball” the formal all-campus winter dance. As head of all programming events for Greek Life, my day is always busy! I also am the Service Chair for Kappa Sigma Upsilon and must plan our community service activities throughout the year. Other than Greek Life, I’m also the Treasurer for Fuller Society, a non-partisan political organization that seeks to inform students on current political issues. We have many great speakers and forums over the year and recently held a mayoral forum for all the candidates here in Bexley.
As for my campaign for public office, it’s not cheap. Already, your typical broke college student, you can add the “-er” suffix to “broke” to describe me! I’ve shaken hundreds and hundreds of hands, put up lots of signs and am prepared to hand out over 2,000 pamphlets this Saturday morning. I’m running for my local school board to raise the standards of education and help the students be more readily prepared for college. I have 5 other opponents and a lot of pluck! It has been a hard, close race. In the end however, I hope I persuade my hometown to see that I care more about educating our future than anything!
I’m supposed to be folding those pamphlets right now, as I have about 500 left! So I will leave it here, until next week. Stay tuned to see the exciting conclusion of Election Night 2007!
