The Results Are In!!!

For those of you who read last week’s cliff-hanger, I have the results of the Mechanicsburg Board of Education race! In a close and very emotional race, I came in fourth out of six candidates running for two seats. It was a tough beat, but as a 19 year old college student making my first run for public office, I garnered 13% of the vote! It was quite an experience and I know it is going to help prepare me down the road, when I run yet again for public office. My only worry was the amount of money I spent on the campaign & the fact that I won’t get it back! Rule #1 of College: Money is scarce. Hold on to it!
My professors were amazingly understanding about the whole campaign, offering other students extra credit to help me, giving me extensions, and being lenient on me in a million different ways. They knew I really cared about the students in my home district and wanted to do anything I could to help in their continuing education. That’s something I love about Cap, the professors look past that whole do the work get a grade thing and focus on helping you grow as a person through your work. But, you do have to do the work eventually, and that’s what I’m doing now! UGH! I have two papers on education policy & legislative redistricting due at the beginning of next week. Oh yay.
After all of the campaigning and researching for my papers, I still have one more duty: Kappa Sigma Upsilon. I have the job of updating my fraternity’s constitution, to make it more relevant in today’s terms. Joining Greek Life is an opportunity to affect a lot on campus, as Greeks are a large, raucous group that are paid attention to. Greeks are in almost every organization on campus and in leadership positions in those organizations. But I digress, I have to update an 80 year constitution, write two important papers, and find a way to pay off my campaign debt! Until next time, stay classy ;)
