#20 Capital 71, Manchester (Ind.) 57(NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind.) - Four players scored in double figures for Capital University's women's basketball team, who opened its season with a 71-57 victory over Manchester (Ind.) College in the Manchester Banker's Classic Friday.
Leading the way with a team-high 18 points was sophomore guard Kristen Richardson (Oxford/Talawanda), while junior guard Caitlin Graessle (Galloway/Bishop Ready) added 14, junior guard Heather McAlpin (Cincinnati/Colerain) scored 11 and junior forward Caitlin Elsass (Batavia/Clermont Northeastern) tallied 10. McAlpin also posted game-highs with nine rebounds and five assists, while Elsass pulled down eight rebounds.
The Crusaders (1-0), ranked 20th in the nation, scored the first seven points of the game and led 26-13 halfway through the first period. Manchester cut the deficit to four at 31-27 with three minutes to go before intermission, but the Crusaders closed the half on a 10-2 run and led 41-29 at the break.
Still leading by 12 midway through the second, Capital used a brief 6-0 spurt to open up a 60-42 edge, and Manchester would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Capital held a 44-20 edge in points in the paint and scored 22 points off of 19 Manchester turnovers.
The Crusaders will play Kalamazoo (Mich.) College in the championship at 3 p.m. Saturday.
