(COLUMBUS, Ohio)--The No. 22 ranked Capital University women's basketball team ended the game on a 13-5 run to beat No. 7 in the nation Washington (Mo.) University, 66-58, Sunday at The Capital Center.
Capital moved to 5-1 on the season, while Washington fell to 4-2 overall in the first-ever regular season meeting between national powers.
Washington led by as eight points and had a five point lead, 36-31 at the half. The Crusaders outscored the Bears 12-6 to start the second half and retake the lead, 43-42 on a Katy Lafferty (Goshen/Clermont Northeastern) three-pointer with 14:16 remaining. Washington answers with an 11-2 run to get an eight-point edge, 53-45 with 10 minutes left. Capital would then go on an 11-0 run capped by a three-pointer by sophomore Chelsea Ruoff (Grove City/Grove City) to give them the lead for good at 56-53 with 5:29 to go.
Junior forward Caitlin Elsass (Batavia/Clermont Northeastern) scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half and sophomore Kristen Richardson (Oxford/Talawanda) had 11 points to lead Capital.
Shanna-Lei Decanay and Janice Evans each had 12 points to lead Washington.
Capital returns to Ohio Athletic Conference play Wednesday (Dec. 5)at 7:30 p.m. at rival Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio. The game will be broadcast LIVE on the radio on WFCO 90.9 FM starting at 7:15 p.m. with the Capital Countdown pregame show.
