Applied Lessons:
All clarinet majors take weekly lessons with Dr. Zugger.  Each week, students perform in their lessons assigned materials from each of the following categories, advancing in difficulty from the first through fourth year:

• Warm-ups:  exercises which focus on a particular aspect of clarinet playing:  tone, range, articulation, intonation
• Technique:  Scale and finger-busting exercises from Baermann's famous scale study book or Kroepsch's 416 Studies
• Etudes:  short one-page selections with a musical emphasis.  Rose, 32 Studies; Rose, 40 Studies; Cavallini, 30 Caprices; Polatschek, Advanced Studies, James Rae, 12 Modern Etudes
• Repertoire:  works from the literature tailored to each student's interests, strengths, challenges; includes works for clarinet and orchestra, clarinet and piano and unaccompanied clarinet solos.
• Other lesson materials include duets and orchestral excerpts, as well as important chamber works.  Master classes occur monthly, during which studio members perform pieces from their repertoire for their peers, and Dr. Zugger presents clarinet topics such as tips for working on reeds.

Students perform a jury at the end of each semester to be advanced to the next level.  A jury performance has four components: 

• Required scales, played from memory
• A prepared selection-typically a repertoire piece worked on in lessons
• A "One-Week Piece"-a one-page etude received by the student 7 days previous to the jury that can not be discussed with or played for Dr. Zugger.
• Sight-Reading

Clarinet Choir/Clarinet Quartet:
The clarinet studio offers two chamber ensemble opportunities.  The Clarinet Choir, under the direction of Dr. Gail Lehto Zugger, meets on Thursdays at 2pm and performs one on-campus performance each semester as well as other concerts.    The Clarinet Choir rehearses and performs works for a wide variety of instrumentations, making use of the E-flat Soprano Clarinet, E-flat Alto Clarinet, B-flat Bass Clarinet, E-flat Contralto Clarinet and B-flat Contrabass Clarinet as well as the traditional B-flat Soprano Clarinet.  Recent repertoire has included:  Gates' Seasonal Sketches, Rossini's Italian in Algiers, Nelhybel's Chorale & Danza and Schickele's Monochrome III for 9 Clarinets.  The Clarinet Quartet meets on Tuesdays at 2pm, and performs works for 4 clarinets or 3 clarinets and bass clarinet.
