English Major

Literature or Professional Writing?

Your choice is more than just an English major. You can choose to major in literature or in professional writing. The study of literature and language is an investment in personal growth and an important part of a liberal arts education.

English Department Approach

The faculty of the English department has made a commitment to providing individualized attention and to encouraging independent thinking. English majors are urged to take courses in ancient and modern languages, history, philosophy and the fine arts, as well as the required courses in American and British literature.

The nine full-time faculty members of the English department bring to their teaching diversity in training, experience and interests. They are generalists, yet have specialties in journalism and professional writing; creative writing; drama and Shakespeare; British literature of the past and present; ethnic and 20th-century American literature; composition and women's studies.

Program

Because the ability to read and write well is recognized as a mark of an educated person, the English department offers a variety of introductory and advanced writing courses. The study of literature and language is an investment in personal growth and an important part of a liberal arts education.

The department offers two majors—literature and professional writing—as well as minors in journalism, literature and creative writing. Students may choose to have dual majors or minors in combination with other disciplines. Education courses also may be combined with an English major, preparing students for secondary school licensure in integrated language arts. Internships are available for qualified students.

Careers and Placement: Whether a student is going into the work force or entering graduate school, Capital's English majors leave the university well prepared. Recent graduates have been employed in public relations, publishing, the ministry, politics, computer documentation and technical writing. Capital also maintains an excellent record of teacher placement for English education majors.

For those students who are continuing their education, literature, creative writing and professional writing are options. English also is a highly recommended major for anyone planning graduate study in law, theology or business.
