The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a musical based on Charles Dickens' last, unfinished novel of the same name.
Rupert Holmes took the unfinished story and adapted it into a farcical musical comedy, filled with audience interaction, even going so far as to let the audience determine who actually killed Edwin Drood!
In the second act, the audience gets to vote as to the true identity of the mysterious detective, as well as who the murderer really is, and even which lovers will live happily ever after. It was the first instance in recent years of a Broadway musical with book, lyrics, music and orchestrations all by the same creator (Rupert Holmes — yes, the “If You Like Pina Colada” song writer!), and the first Broadway musical with multiple possible endings.
Holmes received Tony Awards for Best Book, Best Music and Best Lyrics. The musical won five of the 11 Tony Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Musical.
The Leo Yassenoff’s Roth-Resler Theater has been transformed into London’s Music Hall Royale, where our rowdy (and often uncontrolled) cast will sing and dance through the completed part of Dickens’ last work, and then offer the endings that you, the audience, determine for them!
