(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - Capital University's women's basketball team lost its second consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference contest, falling 57-56 against Heidelberg College Wednesday in The Capital Center.
The loss drops the Crusaders to 10-4 (5-3 OAC), while the Berg improved to 8-6 (4-4 OAC).
Capital held a 49-44 lead late after a layup from junior guard Caitlin Graessle (Galloway/Bishop Ready), but the Berg quickly tied the game on Stacey Richard's fastbreak layup. A Maureen Hunter layup gave Heidelberg the lead at 55-53, but junior guard Katy Lafferty (Goshen/Clermont Northeastern) answered with a three-pointer to put the Crusaders back out front.
Jessic Jennette followed with a layup on the other end to give Heidelberg the 57-56 lead, and Capital missed its final five shots of the game to end it.
Sophomore guard Kristen Richardson (Oxford/Talawanda) scored a game-high 13 points, while junior forward Caitlin Elsass (Batavia/Clermont Northeastern) added 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Lafferty and sophomore guards Abbey Winland (Zanesville/Zanesville) and Chelsea Ruoff (Grove City/Grove City) came off the bench to combine for 23 points.
Amanda Campbell led three Heidelberg players in double figures with 12 points, and Brittany Skolnicki and Hunter each scored 11.
The Crusaders will look to halt their losing skid against Otterbein College Saturday. It is a doubleheader at The Capital Center, and the women's game will tip-off approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men's game, which will start at 2 p.m.
