(COLUMBUS, Ohio)-Capital University's women's basketball team had a slow start, but pulled out a 70-50 Ohio Athletic Conference victory over Marietta College Wednesday in The Capital Center.
The Crusaders' victory gives them two in a row and advances them to 13-7 overall and 7-6 in the OAC. Marietta drops to 3-16 overall and 0-13 in the OAC.
After Marietta opened the game with a 12-3 lead, Capital came right back with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game at the 9:51 mark. There were four lead changes and two ties before Capital finished the half on an 8-2 burst to lead 28-26 at the break.
The Crusaders opened the second half on a 9-2 run, but the Pioneers quickly pulled it within three points, only to see Capital to go on a 23-3 run, which was capped off by an Elsass lay-up, to take a commanding 60-37 lead with 9:03 left in the game.
Capital forced 30 Marietta turnovers and out-rebounded the Pioneers 42-28. The Crusaders shot 46.7 percent from the field compared to Marietta's 38.3 percent.
Kristen Richardson tied her career high with 24 points while Tiffany Withers contributed a season-high 13, while Caitlin Elsass added 14 for the Crusaders.
For the Pioneers, Amanda Carraher and Jamie Beckett each had 16 points to lead Marietta.
