Capital 3-2, Wilmington 0-0(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - Sophomore Brittany Stefano (Uniontown/Uniontown Lake) and senior Erin Willeke (Newark/Licking Valley) combined to throw two complete game shutouts and recorded 27 strikeouts in the process as Capital University's softball team swept a doubleheader from Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College Saturday at Clowson Field.
Stefano struck out 15 Quakers in Capital's 3-0 game one victory, punching out the first seven hitters of the game and 11of the first 13. She allowed only three hits - all singles - and did not walk a batter in improving her record to 9-2 on the season and notching her fourth shutout.
Capital scored all 3 of its runs in the second inning. Sophomore Liz Dumas (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) walked, then went to third on a single from freshman Jen Reimer (Hamilton/Edgewood) and scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Rebekah Peters (Bowling Green/Bowling Green). With two outs and two runners still on base, senior Lindsay Shepherd (Phillipsburg/Northmont) laced a double into the left-centerfield gap to drive in Reimer and Stefano.
Stefano allowed back-to-back singles to start the sixth inning, and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt. She struck out the next two hitters, though, to end Wilmington's only scoring threat.
Willeke picked up her second straight win and her first shutout of the season by holding Wilmington to just four hits and striking out 12. She also notched a pair of hits herself as Capital won the second game 2-0.
Shepherd singled to lead off the first, stole second and third, and scored on a sac fly by junior Kaleen Keitch (Pickerington/Pickerington North). The Crusaders tacked on another run in the third when Keitch scored on an RBI grounder by Dumas.
Capital improves to 11-8 (2-0 OAC) on the season and travels to Bethany (W.Va.) College in a doubleheader Sunday.
