Laurel Talabere Makes a Difference.
"Making a difference is an intentionally collaborative process, which means working together with other people, learning about their goals, and helping them figure out how to obtain their objectives."
Since 1991, nursing professor and two-time Fulbright Award-winner Laurel Talabere has visited Jamaica's University of the West Indies 17 times, performing numerous roles ranging from teacher, researcher and consultant to exam reader, program reviewer and conference presenter. Dr. Talabere's experiences inform her teaching at Capital University. Drawing on her encounters to benefit Capital's students, she has encouraged nursing students to study abroad in Jamaica, England and Sweden, and to travel to Costa Rica. She has brought her passion for improved health for children and families into the classroom in both nursing courses and Capital's core course: Global Awareness.
"It's important to understand the bigger picture: global health. Many students come from homogeneous environments. It's not only about acknowledging that different cultures exist. It's also about a desire to connect, to be open to other ways of viewing the world, and to allow myself to be enriched by others."
