Three Jobs: No Paycheck!

So this summer I vowed to get ahead of some of my peers in the Political Science Department, and attempt to find a good internship. Luckily, one of my friends was leaving his internship in the Statehouse to pursue bigger and better things, so he introduced me and I received the job with State Senator Jason Wilson (D-Columbiana). It has been a real amazing and eye-opening experience! Watching our state government function and talking with constituents and helping them solve their problems. Just the other day, I was helping a woman from Belmont County receive some gas vouchers from the Belmont County Department of Jobs and Family Services. When I introduced myself as being in the Senator’s office, I was put through to the Director of the county office, then forwarded to one of the county commissioners, and finally, I talked to the State Director of the Jobs and Family Services Bureau! Imagine this woman’s surprise when the State Director gave her a call!

Even though I had this awesome internship, I wanted to press ahead and see what more I could do, so I applied to be an intern in United States Senator Sherrod Brown’s (D-OH) Columbus offices. After a rigorous interview process, I received an internship with the U.S. Senator I helped campaign for in 2006! It was an exciting moment for me! I couldn’t believe that I would be working for a member of the federal government!!! In Brown’s office, I will mostly be doing constituent case-work, much like Senator Wilson’s, but I also will be able to accompany the Senator across the state in his travels, and keep him briefed on things happening in that area. I start Friday and I couldn’t be more excited!!!

Finally, I decided to push the envelope one more time and apply to be an intern in Ohio Governor Ted Strickland’s Offices. I had my interview today with two very nice policy staffers for the Governor, who told me that I would be actually working with healthcare policy for Ohio, in the strategy sessions, formulation, and implementation stages!!! To a Public Administration-Political Science double major this is Christmas come early!!! We’ll see what comes of that, but I truly hope I am able to work in there, with the amazing people who do such great things for the State of Ohio!

Well, I must go, but remember, if you are interested in a tour of Capital, please call the Admissions Office at 1-866-544-6175 to set it up!!!

Congratulations to U.S. Senator Barrack Obama on his victory in the Democratic presidential primaries and his winning the nomination. I hope everyone takes a look at the junior senator from Illinois and sees the change, hope, and better America that will come with his election to the presidency!

I would also like to congratulate Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on one hell of a race! I have supported the junior senator from New York since she announced in 2007, and I believe that there is no one better to lead America forward in this century. She has inspired millions of American women to believe that one of them will someday be in the highest office in the land. Whether or not you agree with her politics and policies, we all owe the Senator a debt of gratitude for shattering a glass ceiling that has been there for too long, for knowing the need of universal healthcare before the crisis of 47 million Americans being without it (9 million of which are children), and for believing that every one of us is important and none of us should be invisible to our President. It has been a long fight, and at times, a tragic one. Yet, she has shown us time and time again that the indomitable spirit of America is alive and well: in the people who voted, campaigned, and advocated for this, America’s first woman president. Congratulations again, Senator. You have inspired me and 18 million other voters who were actually proud to cast our ballots for a champion of all our rights. Godspeed in all you do.

To Senator McCain, be prepared for the fight of your life! I look forward to your concession speech in November!

And to all you readers in blogland, remember to stay classy :)

Hi, Are you active in any student groups that are working to promote Obama on the Cap campus? If so, please let me know. I'm a Bexley resident and have volunteered extensively with the campaign, and would like to help at Capital if it would be helpFul. Thanks,

    Becky

    Hey Becky,
The Capital University College Democrats are campaigning hard for Senator Obama's victory in November. They would be a great group to join!
Also, you and a few friends could open up a chapter of the Campaign for Change on Capital's campus if you request funds from Student Government. I happen to be the person you would need to talk to about that as well ;)
Let me know if you have any other questions!

    -Ross
