Other Academic Technology Workshops
We are also offering the following Academic Technology workshops. More dates will be announced soon.
Using Multimedia in Blackboard –
This training will not have the time or resources to show how to create multimedia files but will rather show how to use pictures, audio, video and websites in Blackboard. Don't have pictures, audio, or video? We will also look at how to link and embed resources from the web into Blackboard. Finally we will show how to use mulitimedia resources in test questions and answer choices.
Wikis, Blogs, Audio and Search in Blackboard –
With the building blocks from Learning Objects instructors can add wikis and blogs to Blackboard, can add audio to their course with a slick flash player, and students and faculty can search courses for content. We will cover the technical details of these tools and talk about ideas for using them.
TurningPoint Clickers –
Clickers or student response cards are a great way to engage your students (even the introverts), really assess what students know, and track their progress. A set of 50 TurningPoint clickers are available to be checked out from IT on a daily basis and every semester two sets of 50 clickers are loaned out to two faculty members for the entire semester. This workshop will cover how to create the polling slides, the kinds of questions that can be asked, and the different ways that the data can be reported. We will also cover how the TurningPoint software can connect to the Blackboard gradebook to add polling results directly to the gradebook
Checking for Plagiarism –
Using Capital’s account on Turnitin.com and the SafeAssign tool in Blackboard, you can check to see if the work that a student has submitted to you is truly an original work. Turnitin.com will check your student’s paper against their database of over 10 billion web pages; 70 million other student papers; 10 thousand journals, magazines and newspapers; and thousands of books. This will be a web based training delivered from the representatives at Turnitin. There will be time afterwards for discussion, reflection and application and we will also look at other plagiarism checking tools.
Help Documentation – At the bottom of this page you will find several help documents that can help you to get started using Blackboard.
Consultations – One-on-one Blackboard consultations are available for those that have individual needs. These consultations can be delivered face-to-face, over the phone or via email depending on the instructors needs and comfort level.
Blackboard Online Course –
The Blackboard online course is a Bb course designed to teach Bb skills; teaching the tool with the tool. The online course contains video and text of all of the topics covered in the face-to-face orientation and is currently being expanded to cover more complex topics. It also has an online discussion board and several self assessments. This online course should appear in an instructor’s ‘My Courses’ section in Blackboard under ‘Courses in which you are enrolled’ as ‘Faculty Bb Orientation’. If you do not see the online orientation listed in your ‘My Courses’ section please contact Instructional Technology and Academic Support directly at academictech@capital.edu
