Capital To Commemorate 20-Year Anniversary of Berlin Wall’s Demise on Monday

Capital University will mark the 20-year anniversary of the Berlin Wall's demise on Monday, Nov. 9, in Blackmore Library, where the one of the largest section of the wall in the United States has been displayed since 1992.

The event will begin at noon and will feature remarks by law professor and historian David Mayer, Ph.D., Alexander Pantsov, professor of history, members of the Fuller Society, and more. Remarks will be followed by a series of readings and recitations of excerpts from historically significant speeches, public documents and other records tied to the events surrounding the wall, its fall, and what is considered to be the tipping point toward German reunification and the end of communist rule in Eastern Europe.

Possible readings include John F. Kennedy's 1963 speech in which he proudly proclaimed "Ich bin ein Berliner" nearly two years after the wall's construction in an effort to fortify morale among West Berliners fearful of occupation by East Germany, and Ronald Reagan's 1987 challenge to then Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall," among others.

Readings will be given by faculty members and students.

Throughout the day, students, faculty and staff will be encouraged to participate in a public art project by inscribing words or graffiti art on one of two "freedom walls" that will flank the section of the Berlin Wall in the Library. The project is intended to mimic the graffiti art on the Berlin Wall's west side. (The medium will be chalk. Sorry, graffiti artists, no spray paint.)

In this talk, Kubatko will describe a recently developed approach to efficiently estimate the species-level phylogenetic relationships among a collection of species using data from multiple genes. The method will be applied to a study of the evolutionary relationships among North American rattlesnakes.

The lecture will take place from 4-5 p.m. in Battelle Hall Room 254. Refreshments will be served. All students, faculty and staff are welcome.

Sigma Alpha Beta and Charity: Water

Thirsty? Most of us have never really been thirsty. We’ve never had to leave our houses and walk five miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean. Yet more than 1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have clean water. That means one in six people in our world don’t have access to the most basic of human needs. Something we can’t imagine going 12 hours without. Water.

Sigma Alpha Beta invites you to put yourself in the shoes of one in six people who don't have access to clean water. Follow them on their daily journey. Carry 80 pounds of water in yellow fuel cans. Dig with their children in sand for water. Line up at a well and wait eight hours for a turn.

Now, make a decision to help. We’re not offering grand solutions and billion dollar schemes, but instead, simple things that work. Things like freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters. For about $20 a person, we know how to help millions of people. Start by helping one.

Sigma Alpha Beta is looking to help bring clean water to those in need. Find out how you can help.
