WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Capital University volleyball team opened play at the 2008 Holiday INNvitational hosted by Washington & Jefferson with victories over Franklin & Marshall and Carnegie Mellon on Saturday evening.
The Crusaders defeated the Diplomats, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-19) to begin the weekend’s action. CU was led by junior Allison Hostetler (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton HS) with 11 kills while hitting at a .318 clip. Senior Kelly Steinman (New Bremen, Ohio/New Bremen HS) hit .467 while tallying eight kills and junior Jenifer Fekpe (Hillard, Ohio/Hillard Davidson HS) finished with 13 kills and a .300 hitting percentage against Franklin & Marshall.
Capital outlasted Carnegie Mellon, 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 15-10) for its second win of the night. Hostetler and Steinman were big again for CU in a winning effort. Hostetler hit .500 while recording 15 kills while Steinman had 14 kills on a .565 pace to go along with six block assists. Senior Jackie Helm (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic HS) added 8 kills of her own as the Crusaders improved to 5-1 overall on the season.
CU wraps up play at the Washington & Jefferson Holiday INNvitational on Sunday with matches against Penn State-Altoona (Noon ET) and the host W&J Presidents (2 p.m. ET).
