AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – A pair of Capital University student-athletes took home weekly honors from the Ohio Athletic Conference on Monday. Senior Joey Snyder was named the OAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week while junior Brad Pickens was tabbed as the OAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) led the Crusader men’s soccer team to a 3-0-0 record last week with the game-winning goal in victories over Urbana, Grove City and McMurray. He also earned All-Tournament honors at the adidas Ohio Wesleyan Invitational following a two-goal effort against Grove City and another score against McMurray. The forward has scored at least one goal in all four games this season as Capital is off to its best start in over 10 years.
Pickens (New London, Ohio/Western Reserve HS) gave the Crusaders a big boost in their season opener with a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter as CU beat Adrian, 34-14. He also finished second on the team with eight total tackles including six solos and one for a loss. The defensive back was part of a Capital defense that allowed just 170 yards through the air and 3-for-15 third down conversions by the Bulldog offense.
The Capital men’s soccer team (4-0-0) will return to action this week with a trip to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. ET match. CU football (1-0) moved up one spot to No. 6 in this week's d3football.com Top 25 Poll and will resume its 2008 season on Sept. 20 with its OAC opener at Heidelberg at 1:30 p.m. ET.
