NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Capital volleyball continued its winning ways at the Volley Against Violence Tournament hosted by Westminster College on Saturday morning with wins over Georgian Court, 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-19) and Grove City, 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-11, 22-25, 15-12). With the wins, Capital improved to 11-2 overall this season.
CU defeated GC, which is from Ontario, Canada, in its first-ever match against a team from outside the United States. The Crusaders won with a solid team effort as junior Sarah Gallik (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston HS) led the charge with five kills. The trio of senior Jackie Helm (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic HS) and juniors Allison Hostetler (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton HS) and Laura Wichman (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon HS) each added four kills. CU also finished with nine service aces while displaying solid team defense.
Capital wrapped up a perfect weekend of play by outlasting Grove City behind All-Tournament performances by Hostetler and Jenna Zumberger (DeGraff, Ohio/Fairlawn HS).
CU was paced offensively by the trio of Hostetler, Wichman and senior Kelly Steineman (New Bremen, Ohio/New Bremen HS) while libero Sara Doebel (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde HS) had another big match in the back row with 21 digs. She was followed by 15 digs from Helm and 14 by Zumberger in a winning effort.
The Crusaders will return home to host Capital Mid-Month Madness Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Capital Center.
