COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three first half goals propelled #8 Capital past visiting Mount St. Joseph, 6-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Bernlohr Stadium.
CU (6-1-0) got on the board in the third minute as sophomore Lewis Black (Auckland, New Zealand/St. Peter’s College) redirected a feed from junior Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) and put the ball in the back of the net for a Crusader goal.
Just over 10 minutes later, senior Tyler Mowbray (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) had the ball just inside the top of the box and passed it back to junior Josh Thaboune (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS) who fired from 15 yards out and beat the keep to the bottom left corner for a 2-0 CU advantage.
Capital tacked on another score in the 32nd minute when freshman Matthew Gutrie (Worthington, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) passed the ball ahead to sophomore Jon Boghossian (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) who dodged around the goalie and put the ball inside the right post for a 3-0 Crusader lead.
Just after the intermission, a Capital players was taken down in the box. After a yellow card was assessed to the Lions, junior Robbie Breen (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) beat the goalie to the right side on a penalty kick to put CU up 4-0.
In the 73rd minute, sophomore Jeremy Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) punched a corner from the right into the box that was headed past the keeper by junior Colin Wiggins (Groveport, Ohio/Madison Christian HS) for a 5-0 Capital lead.
The Crusaders closed out the scoring with just 48 seconds remaining in the contest when Boghossian scored his second goal of the match on an assist by junior Drue Herbert (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North HS).
Sophomore Justin Bultman (Maineville, Ohio/Kings HS) did not have to make a save to earn his third shutout of the season in a match that featured a 33-6 advantage in shots taken for CU.
Capital will return to action in another CU soccer doubleheader on Wednesday at Wittenberg. The women will play at 5 p.m. ET with the men following at 7:30 p.m. ET.
