Capital University

For Students With Disabilities

Capital University is committed to the intellectual development of all of its students. And our Office of Disability Services (ODS) is an active part of that commitment. If you're a prospective or current student with a disability, the ODS is your greatest ally. From the admission process onward, we'll help you get the most from your Capital education.

Applying to Capital as a Student with a Disability

The basic application process for admission to Capital is the same for all students.

You don't have to disclose a disability unless you need related accommodations. But it's best to let us know as early as possible so we can work with you to make arrangements. You are responsible for telling us what you need.

Send documentation of your disability directly to ODS when you submit your admission application. This will help us gauge your eligibility for services and accommodations. It will not affect your eligibility for admission to Capital.

When we receive your documentation, we'll send you a letter of acknowledgment. If we need more information from you, we will let you know then.

Once You're Here

If you are admitted to Capital, you've proven your ability to learn. And we can help you get the accommodations you need to excel. These may include:

  • Testing accommodations, such as extended testing time or a distraction-reduced environment for students with ADD or learning disabilities
  • Access to assistive technology, such as CCTV for students with low vision and word prediction software for students with learning disabilities
  • Interpreters or transcribers for students who are deaf
  • Books on tape for students who are blind or dyslexic
  • Books in electronic format to be used with a screen reader by students who are blind
  • Assistance in identifying an appropriate notetaker
  • Counseling related to disability issues
  • Tutoring, study strategies, instruction and support

Capital provides all the services that are mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504.

Your Partner in Learning

Throughout your years at Capital, we'll work to make your academic experience as smooth and rewarding as possible. The ODS is part of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT). And CELT's other academic support services, including peer tutoring and academic coaching, are also available to you.
