SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Capital University men’s soccer team was shutout for the first time in the 2008 season as it lost at #13 Wittenberg, 2-0 on Wednesday night in non-conference action.
Capital fell to 6-2-0 overall on the season and 1-1-0 against nationally ranked teams despite a 10 save effort in goal by senior goalkeeper Joey Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS).
Overall, CU was outshot by WU 21-8 and the Tigers took 10 corner kicks to the Crusaders’ three.
Wittenberg got on the board in the 19th minute when Matt Borland collected the ball in the midfield and fired a long shot over the keepers head for a 1-0 Wittenberg lead.
Capital turned up its offensive pressure in the second half and after it failed to chase down a ball that crossed the end line, Wittenberg took a goal kick. WU played the ball forward to Borland who fed Shane Price and beat one defender to score an insurance goal in the 88th minute and give Wittenberg a 2-0 victory.
Capital, which is ranked No. 4 in the latest NSCAA Great Lakes Regional Poll, returns home to play host to Elmhurst on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
