COLUMBUS, Ohio – A bending shot past a diving keeper midway through the second overtime period ended a roughly played non-conference soccer matchup with Capital falling to visiting Elmhurst, 3-2 on Sunday at Bernlohr Stadium.
The match featured 26 total fouls and six yellow cards with Elmhurst (8-2-0) being booked five times and Capital (6-3-0) once. CU also held a 24-9 lead in shots including an 11-4 edge in the second half, but could not take advantage.
Capital scored early as Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) got a throw in on the left side and tossed it to the foot of senior Joey Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) who ripped a shot past the keeper from 10 yards out in the sixth minute.
Elmhurst got the goal back in the 22nd minute when Jacob Misel fed a pass vertically through the Crusader defense to Brian McMahon who fired from the top of the box around a charging goalkeeper for a 1-1 score that remained through halftime.
McCarthy got the CU offense going once again in the 74th minute when he dribbled the ball into the box towards the right post. He then crossed it to the middle at the foot of junior Josh Thaboune (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS) who put it in from five yards out with one touch for a 2-1 Capital lead.
Elmhurst got the equalizer with just 2:14 remaining in regulation when Carlos Flores took the ball into the box and flicked it over the head of a charging Capital keeper to send the game into overtime knotted at 2-2.
Capital had a number of quality chances in front of the goal during both overtime periods, but could not find the back of the net. Elmhurst then took advantage of the opportunity when Jake Pahr got the ball at the top of the box on the left side and then bended a ball around the goalie from 12 yards out as the Crusaders lost 3-2.
Capital will begin Ohio Athletic Conference play next Sunday when it plays host to John Carroll at 1 p.m. ET.
