ASSMANN, SMITH TAKE HOME OAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Juniors Marty Assmann (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley HS) and Ronnie Smith (Columbus, Ohio/DeSales HS) were tabbed as the Ohio Athletic Conference Football Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively on Monday.

The duo helped Capital (3-0, 2-0 OAC) earn a 48-28 victory over Wilmington on Saturday to remain at No. 4 nationally in the d3football.com Poll that was released yesterday.  Assmann and Smith are the second and third Crusaders to earn OAC weekly honors in football this season as Brad Pickens(New London, Ohio/Western Reserve HS) was named the OAC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8.

Capital was paced by a career day from Assmann who was 24-of-43 for 454 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions against Wilmington (1-2, 1-1 OAC).  He finished just 22 yards shy of the CU single-game record for passing (Dan Bartholomew at Otterbein, 9/22/01).  Assmann is now 56-of-97 for 895 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions on the season.

Smith was part of defense that took advantage of three turnovers including two of his interceptions that came in the second quarter.  He returned one of those picks 34 yards for a touchdown while he took his other back 36 yards to set up a field goal attempt just before halftime.  Overall this season, Smith has made seven tackles while recording three interceptions and two pass breakups.

The Crusaders will host Marietta in their annual Homecoming Game on Saturday at Bernlohr Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.
