COLUMBUS, Ohio – Homestanding Capital swept Urbana, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18) in the first of two non-conference volleyball matches on Monday at the Capital Center. The Crusaders (16-4) proceeded to knock off Ursuline in straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) in the nightcap.
Capital defeated Urbana in an opener that was led by the defenses on both sides of the net. CU out hit UU, .149 to -.018 as junior libero Sara Doebel (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde HS) led all players with 10 digs.
Classmate Allison Hostetler (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton HS) was a force at the net with six blocks and seven kills while fellow junior Jennifer Fekpe (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) had four blocks of her own to help the Crusaders post a 8.0-6.0 lead in overall blocking.
Senior Jackie Helm (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic HS) added six kills, seven digs and one service ace for Capital which improved to 7-3 at home this season.
Capital's defense limited Ursuline to a .037 hitting percentage in the second match, while the Crusaders posted a .266 hitting percentage themselves.
Junior Sarah Gallik (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston HS) had seven kills in just 10 attempts and also recorded eight digs. Hostetler had a match-best eight kills and three total blocks, and Helm had 20 digs to pace the defense.
Capital will play it's conference home opener at 7 p.m. Wednesday when the Crusaders host Baldwin-Wallace College.
