The Center for Faith and Learning is a place of dialogue meant to explore and illustrate the meaning and relevance of the University’s Lutheran heritage for its mission, program and community.
We understand that our Lutheran heritage implies a commitment to:
- Education for whole personhood
- Open, critical inquiry
- Vocation & service to others
- Stewardship of the creation and of our particular gifts
- Community, diversity and inclusivity
Goals of the Center
- To increase a university-wide awareness and appreciation of our Lutheran heritage.
- To sponsor and enable reflection and discussion of the deep needs and issues of our contemporary world.
- To create a dialogical community of discourse about such issues.
- To perennially examine the implications of our heritage and mission for our learning and teaching here.
Program
The program highlights include:
- Organizing an annual seminar / retreat for Capital faculty and staff
- Creating an open space for continuing informal campus dialogue
- Sponsoring an annual speaker series related to issues in faith and learning
- Promoting scholarly inquiry of faculty and students that focuses on the intersection of faith & learning
- Maintaining an accessible collection of resource materials for campus use
- Identifying and strengthening bridges between existing or emerging activities of the university and our Lutheran heritage
- Encouraging creative endeavors that express our Lutheran grounding
Center Director
Dr. Tom Christenson is professor of philosophy at Capital University where he has been teaching since 1989.
He is the author of The Gift and Task of Lutheran Higher Education (Fortress, 2003). In that book he works out in some detail an informing vision for contemporary Lutheran colleges and universities.
