COLUMBUS, Ohio – Homestanding Capital overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat Wilmington, 2-1 in double overtime of an Ohio Athletic Conference men’s soccer match at Bernlohr Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Capital (9-4-0, 3-1-0 OAC) out shot Wilmington (8-5-1, 1-2-1 OAC) 23-17 and CU took eight corner kicks to WC’s seven.
One of the corner kicks for the Quakers led to the first goal of the match. Wilmington drew a corner kick with less than one minute left in the first half. Cayleb Paulino served the ball on the restart right to Thomas Keane who headed it into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead with just 31 seconds left until halftime.
Capital used some solid defense and a number of quality scoring chances to keep the margin at just one when junior Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) was taken down on the right side of the box after beating his defender. The Crusaders were awarded a penalty kick and classmate Josh Thaboune (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS) drilled the ball past the diving goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1 in the 61st minute.
The match went through the first overtime with each side earning one quality scoring chance. Then in the second overtime period, Capital took the ball into its offensive end and senior Tyler Mowbray (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) gathered a deflection at the top of the box and dribbled between two defenders. His shot went underneath the Quaker keeper only 29 seconds into the second overtime session for a 2-1 Capital victory.
Senior John Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) made six saves including four in the second half of regulation for Capital, which returns to action as part of a Crusader soccer doubleheader at Bernlohr Stadium on Saturday. The CU women will face Marietta at 1 p.m. ET with the men taking on the Pioneers at 3 p.m. ET. Both matches will feature live stats at www.CapitalCrusaders.net.
