COLUMBUS, Ohio – Steven McCarthy’s third goal of the afternoon with 2:01 remaining in double overtime gave the Capital men’s soccer team an emotional 4-3 victory over Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Bernlohr Stadium on Saturday.
Capital won its third straight match and second consecutive in overtime to improve to 10-4-0 overall and 4-1-0 in OAC play. Marietta fell to 7-4-3 overall and 2-1-1 in OAC action.
Junior Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) found the back of the net just 82 seconds into the match. He took a pass through the defense off a restart at the top of the box by sophomore Lewis Black (Auckland, New Zealand/St. Peter’s College) who found McCarthy wide open in front of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Marietta evened the score quickly when Matt Sleyzak fed the ball forward to start a breakaway for Kyle Muth who finished to make it a 1-1 score in the 19th minute.
Capital would get one more score before halftime as Steven McCarthy put in a rebound from the goalkeeper in the 37th minute to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead at the intermission.
The visitors would hold on until the 72nd minute when Seita Kawamoto would even the score with a shot over the head of the CU keeper for a goal. Marietta continued the surge with another goal just less than four minutes later when Dele Adedapo scored on a low bouncing shot for a 3-2 lead with 14:33 remaining in regulation.
CU used another foul by Marietta at the top of the box to setup the equalizer it needed in the 79th minute. Freshman Daniel McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) took the free kick from two yards outside the top of the box and bent it to the far post to send the match into overtime tied at 3-all.
After neither team could score in the first overtime session, Black and Steven McCarthy combined again for the game winner. Black redirected a ball in front of the goal to the head of McCarthy who beat the keeper for a 4-3 victory.
Senior John Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) made nine saves for the Crusaders.
Capital will play its final home match of the season on Wednesday against Baldwin-Wallace at 4 p.m. ET.
