COLUMBUS, Ohio – Homestanding Capital retained sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference men’s soccer standings with a 4-1 victory over Baldwin-Wallace on Wednesday afternoon at Bernlohr Stadium.
With the win, Capital (11-4-0, 5-1-0 OAC) secured itself a berth in the OAC Tournament with three regular-season matches still remaining on its schedule. Baldwin-Wallace fell to 11-5-0 overall and 1-5-0 in OAC play.
The Crusaders held a 24-12 advantage in shots and a 4-3 lead in corner kicks as senior Joey Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) led the charge with a pair of assists on the day.
Joey Snyder crossed the ball in front of the goal mouth in the 33rd minute to setup the first CU goal as junior Michael Gregory (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South HS) scored from just in front of the right post for a 1-0 lead.
Capital followed with another goal in the 41st minute when Joey Snyder pushed the ball ahead past two defenders and onto the foot of freshman Daniel McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) who blasted it into the back of the net from the left side for a 2-0 advantage.
Junior Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) scrambled his way to his 39th career goal in the 74th minute of the game. After missing on two shot attempts in front of the net, McCarthy put home a rebound to give CU a 3-0 lead late in the contest.
After the Yellow Jackets scored on a header to the top right corner off the hands of the Crusader goalkeeper, Capital’s Lewis Black (Auckland, New Zealand/St. Peter’s College) followed with a header of his own off a rebound inside the left post in the 80th minute for a 4-1 Crusader victory.
Senior John Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) made six saves in goal for Capital which returns to action on the road this Saturday as part of a soccer doubleheader at Mount Union. The Capital women will face the same Purple Raiders at 1 p.m. with the men following at 3 p.m.
