ALLIANCE, Ohio – Current Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week Steven McCarthy played up to his billing as he scored the lone goal of the match 1:54 into overtime as visiting Capital defeated Mount Union, 1-0 in a men’s soccer matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders have now won five consecutive matches against OAC competition to take over sole possession of first place in the OAC standings with only two conference matches remaining. Capital, the 2007 OAC Regular Season Champions, can clinch home field advantage throughout the OAC Tournament with either two victories or a win and a draw in its final two regular season matches this week.
Capital tallied a 15-11 advantage in shots taken and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks as Mount Union kept the match close with a physical defense that was whistled for 19 fouls and five cautions to CU’s 11 fouls.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, Capital ended the match when McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) ripped a shot from 20 yards out that beat the keeper to the far post for the game-winner just 1:54 into the overtime session.
Senior John Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) tallied six saves in goal for Capital which returns to the road to take on Heidelberg on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. CU will then head to Otterbein for its final regular season match on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
