ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital women’s soccer team scored four goals in the first half to beat host Mount Union, 4-1 in an Ohio Athletic Conference match on Saturday. With the win, Capital improved to 9-5-2 overall and 4-3-0 in the OAC to take over fourth place in the league standings.
Capital began the scoring just 80 seconds into the match when junior Katie Robinson (Grove City, Ohio/Bishop Ready HS) stole a pass from the Mount Union defense and beat the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Kaylee Phillips (Watkins, Ohio/Watkins Memorial HS) would score the next two goals to put the game in control for the Crusaders. Phillips tallied an unassisted goal in the 36th minute with a blast over the head of the keeper from 40 yards out. Then in the 39th minute she took a pass from sophomore Samantha Shaffer (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont HS) and put it home from 18 yards out for a 3-0 Capital lead.
Shaffer would score a goal of her own just before halftime. Fellow sophomore Laura Shields (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville HS) crossed the ball to the foot of Shaffer who beat the Purple Raider keeper to the far post for a 4-0 advantage in the 43rd minute.
Mount Union got on the board with a goal by Jenn Scrimenti on a free kick in the 79th minute, but Capital finished with an 18-8 lead in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks to secure a 4-1 victory.
Freshman Rose Bussey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City HS) and junior Erica Shannon (Whitehall, Ohio/Bishop Hartley HS) each made one save while splitting time in goal for Capital, which returns home to play host to Heidelberg on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.
