Getting Financial Aid

The impact of your Capital University education will last longer than your iPod. Longer than your first car and even your second. In fact, you will use your Capital education in every step of your career and throughout the rest of your life. We don’t want money to stand in the way of something that valuable. That’s why we’ll do our best to make your Capital education affordable.

Nearly 100 percent of our students receive some form of financial assistance. You may qualify for merit and recognition scholarships and grants based on criteria like academics, Lutheran heritage and musical ability. You might even be eligible for the up to full-tuition Collegiate Fellowship Award and Capital Scholars award. You could also qualify for need-based financial assistance in the form of loans and grants.

Essential Steps

Of course there’s paperwork – but we’ll try to make it as painless as possible. Start with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It’s used by colleges all over the country to determine financial aid.

  1. Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) with the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). You must apply for a PIN in order to electronically sign your FAFSA. If you are a dependent, your parents should also apply for their own PIN so they can electronically sign your FAFSA.
  2. Complete your FAFSA and file it electronically. You’ll need Capital’s Title IV code, 003023.  Be sure to file as soon as possible after January 1 to keep all your options open.

Helpful Hints

  1. Apply early. The sooner you apply for financial aid, the more possibilities will be available. Check out our timeline for applications and decisions for the full scoop.
  2. Report special circumstances to Capital after you’ve filed your FAFSA.
  3. Look for third-party scholarships. From your hometown Kiwanis Club to your dad’s company, many institutions unconnected with Capital or the government offer scholarships to college students. Ask your high school guidance counselor for ideas on where to look.
