CRUSADERS CLINCH OAC REGULAR SEASON TITLE, BEAT HEIDELBERG 3-1

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University men’s soccer team clinched its second consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship with a 3-1 victory over Heidelberg on a rainy Tuesday evening.

Capital (13-4-0, 7-1-0 OAC) has now won six straight matches and will also earn a first round bye in the OAC Tournament.  The Crusaders first postseason match will take place at Bernlohr Stadium on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET against an opponent yet to be determined.

CU scored twice a first half that was played during a driving rain storm.  Junior Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) found the back of the net with an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute for his 100th career point (44 goals, 12 assists) and a 1-0 Crusader lead.

His younger brother Daniel McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) would provide the rest of the offense on the night for Capital.  The freshman scored goals in the 42nd minute and another with nine seconds remaining in the contest for his third and fourth goals of the season.

Heidelberg (6-10-2, 3-4-1 OAC) tallied an unassisted goal of its own in the 72nd minute and held a 12-10 lead in shots taken, but it was not enough to overcome Capital which won 3-1.

Senior John Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) made two saves in goal for the Crusaders, which will close out their 2008 regular season on Friday with a trip to face OAC rival Otterbein at 3:30 p.m. ET.
