CAPITAL MEN’S SOCCER WELL REPRESENTED ON ALL-OAC TEAMS

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Capital University placed five players on the All-OAC men’s soccer teams on Wednesday following a vote conducted by the league’s head coaches.  The 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season Champions were represented by OAC Forward of the Year Steven McCarthy and OAC Midfielder of the Year Danny McCarthy as well as Second Team selections John Snyder, Kevin Doran and Josh Thaboune.

 

Capital had a total of five players earn All-OAC honors which was second only to Ohio Northern, which won the OAC Tournament title to make just its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history.  The Crusaders were ranked as high as No. 8 nationally this season en route to its second consecutive OAC Regular Season Championship with a 7-1-1 record in conference play and a 13-5-1 overall mark.

 

Junior Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) led the Crusaders with 15 goals and 35 points while also tying for the team lead with five assists.  He led the OAC in points per game (1.84) and goals per game (0.79) with seven of his goals coming against conference opponents.  The 2007 All-America selection and Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association Player of the Year has posted 15 goals in each of his three seasons and is Capital all-time leader in career goals scored (45) and is the first player to reach the century mark in career points (101) with one year of eligibility still remaining.

 

Freshman Danny McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) ranked fourth on the team with 13 points during his first collegiate season including 10 during OAC play.  His five assists tied for the team lead while two of his four goals this season came in a 3-1 win at Heidelberg that clinched the OAC Regular Season Title for the Crusdaders.  McCarthy also tallied the game-winner at Baldwin-Wallace and added another goal during a dramatic 4-3 victory over Marietta during the regular season.

 

Senior John Snyder (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) posted an 8-4-1 record as Capital’s goalkeeper this fall with an undefeated 6-0-1 mark during OAC regular season play.  He allowed one goal or less eight times including a 1-0 shutout of Mount Union.  Overall, The 2007 OAC Goalkeeper of the Year had a 1.52 goals against average and a .793 save percentage as he ranked second in the OAC in saves per game (5.62).

 

Junior Kevin Doran (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy HS) helped the Crusader defense four shutouts overall this season and outscore its opponents by an average of 1.42 goals per game, which was the second best mark in the OAC.  Doran tallied two goals this season including one in the regular season finale at Otterbein.

 

Senior Josh Thaboune (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS) posted eight goals and 21 total points to finish second on the team in both categories this season.  He tallied both of Capital’s goals in a 2-1 overtime victory over then #7 Ohio Wesleyan to earn OAC Player of the Week honors.  The 2007 All-OAC Honorable Mention selection also tallied the game-winning goal against John Carroll and found the back of the next five times overall during OAC play.
