AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Capital University soccer players Josh Thaboune and Molly Sheils were each named to the Ohio Athletic Conference All-Academic teams for men’s and women’s soccer respectively on Wednesday following a vote conducted amongst the Senior Woman Administrators from OAC member schools.
To be eligible for Academic All-OAC, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least her second year of participation in the sport.
Junior Josh Thaboune (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS) was an OAC Second Team pick this season while holding a 3.56 GPA as a communication major. He posted eight goals and 21 total points to finish second on the team in both categories this season. Thaboune tallied both of Capital’s goals in a 2-1 overtime victory over then #7 Ohio Wesleyan to earn OAC Player of the Week honors. The 2007 All-OAC Honorable Mention selection also tallied the game-winning goal against John Carroll and found the back of the next five times overall during OAC play.
Classmate Molly Sheils (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville HS) was an OAC First Team selection as a midfielder for the third consecutive season in 2008 and holds a 3.85 GPA as a psychology major. She was third on the team in goals scored (8), assists (2) and total points (18) while adding two game-winning goals this season. Sheils found the back of the net twice in Capital’s first victory of the season over Ohio Wesleyan while also scoring the opening goal of the match in a 3-0 win at Heidelberg.
The Capital men’s soccer team had a total of five players earn All-OAC honors which was second only to Ohio Northern, which won the OAC Tournament title to make just its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history. The Crusaders were ranked as high as No. 8 nationally this season en route to its second consecutive OAC Regular Season Championship with a 7-1-1 record in conference play and a 13-5-1 overall mark.
The Crusader women’s soccer team finished fourth in the OAC standings with a 5-4-0 conference record and an 11-7-2 overall mark. Capital advanced to the OAC Tournament for a conference-record 12th time in 2008 while also earning a win over #22 Carnegie Mellon and a draw at #20 Wittenberg throughout the season.
