BEREA, Ohio – Senior Quintin Mitchell came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points as #12 Capital defeated Baldwin-Wallace, 92-87 in overtime during the Ohio Athletic Conference men’s basketball opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
The visiting Crusaders (6-0, 1-0 OAC) overcame a 14-point second half deficit behind a group of four different Capital players that tallied double digits in scoring during the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Mitchell (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Libbey HS) tallied 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half. Overall, he made 9-of-13 shots from the floor and pulled down nine rebounds to go along with two steals.
Sophomore DJ Frazier (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow HS) scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half of regulation and had 10 rebounds overall while adding four steals and two assists for CU.
The senior duo of Ryan Wood (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central HS) and Jake Fanning (Danbury, Ohio/Danbury HS) each finished with 14 points overall. All of Wood’s 14 points came in the final 20 minutes of regulation while Fanning put up a dozen points in the second half.
Capital made just 21-of-41 free throws on the afternoon, but was 5-for-6 in overtime with Frazier and Fanning each going 2-for-2 from the line in the extra session. Mitchell added two more layups as CU outscored B-W, 9-4 in overtime to take the game.
Overall, CU made 28-of-58 shots from the field including 9-of-23 from three-point range while holding a 42-27 advantage in bench points and a 34-30 edge at points in the paint and 18-15 lead in points off turnovers.
The Crusaders will return to the road on Thursday with a trip to Wilmington for another OAC contest beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.
